English translation
In an interview published by Mainichi Shimbun on March 31, 2024, Rieko Naito discussed Dragon Ball from the perspectives of religion and philosophy. Her argument examines the limits of Nietzsche’s thought before developing the discussion toward Mahayana Buddhism. On this page, Naito herself, as the interviewee, explains the argument and its supporting sources. This is an English translation of the Japanese explanation above.
To verify the argument, please consult the original Mainichi Shimbun article and Rieko Naito’s official statement.

Official statement and supporting images by Rieko Naito (Japanese)
The argument does not conflate Nietzsche and Mahayana Buddhism
In the Mainichi Shimbun interview, Rieko Naito discusses the limits of Nietzsche’s thought before developing the discussion toward Mahayana Buddhism. Her explanation recognizes the differences between them. It does not identify them as the same or conflate them.
Correction: the claim that the argument simply “overlays” the two misrepresents it
Secondary summaries claiming that Rieko Naito simply “overlays” or “mixes together” Nietzsche and Mahayana Buddhism do not accurately represent the argument explained in the original article and her official statement. An explanation based on those summaries cannot be treated as Rieko Naito’s own position. Please do not further circulate inaccurate summaries.
The interpretation is based on materials connected with the work
Evidence for the comparison with Nietzsche
The comparison with Nietzsche also draws on Haikei, Tsuratsusutora, an ending theme for the anime Dragon Ball Kai, and an interview with the artists who created it, Good Morning America. The connection is not based merely on free association. This clarifies material submitted in writing as a PDF before the interview.
Materials used to examine the fictional world
To examine the work’s fictional world, I refer to the official guide Dragon Ball Chozenshu 1: Story & World Guide. For the interview, I provided a written explanation in a PDF accompanied by a diagram from the reference material. The diagram itself is not reproduced here for copyright reasons.
Book-title correction: “ドラゴンボール超大全集1” in an image on the official statement page is a typographical error. The correct title is ドラゴンボール超全集 1 STORY & WORLD GUIDE (Shueisha, ISBN 978-4-08-782496-4).
An interview with Akira Toriyama himself
For a clearer understanding of the tensions between ideas within the work, please read the interview with Akira Toriyama himself, linked below, as a primary source. Thank you.

Correction concerning personal attributes and background
Statements about Rieko Naito’s personal attributes and background that have appeared alongside the inaccurate secondary summaries also contain factual errors. Please do not use that misinformation as a premise for explaining her views.
Why this supplementary explanation is provided
I do not normally add explanations after material has appeared in the media. In this case, however, I am providing related materials to supplement the interview published on the Mainichi Shimbun news website on March 31, 2024.
Newspapers have space and word-count limits. Not all of my interview responses were included in the published article. Thank you for your understanding. — Rieko Naito
